मूर्ख और ठग — The Fool and the Swindlers
एक गाँव में एक मूर्ख आदमी रहता था। गाँव के छोटे छोटे बच्चे उसका मजाक उड़ाते थे। वह लाख चतुर बनने की कोशिश करता पर कोई न कोई उसे मूर्ख बनाता रहता।
एक दिन वह अपने घोड़े और बकरी बेचने बाजार जा रहा था। वह घोड़े पर सवार था। उसने बकरी के गले में घंटी बाँध रखी थी। रस्सी का एक हिस्सा बकरी के गले में, दूसरा हिस्सा घोड़े की पूँछ से बाँध रखा था। मूर्ख को जानने वाले कुछ ठग उसका पीछा कर रहे थे। उनमें से एक ठग ने बकरी के गले से घंटी खोलकर घोड़े की पूँछ में बाँध दी। इसके बाद बकरी को लेकर रफूचक्कर हो गया। घोड़े की पूँछ पर बँधी घंटी बजती रही और मूर्ख यही समझता रहा कि बकरी उसके पीछे पीछे आ रही है।
थोड़ी देर बाद दूसरा ठग आया। उसने मूर्ख को रोककर पूछा, "भाई साहब, आपने अपने घोड़े की पूँछ में यह घंटी क्यों बाँध रखी है?" उस मूर्ख ने पीछे मुड़कर देखा तो बकरी नदारद थी। उसे बड़ा ताज्जुब हुआ।
तभी तीसरा ठग आ पहुँचा। उसने मूर्ख से कहा, "मैंने अभी देखा है कि एक आदमी तुम्हारी बकरी को लिए भागा जा रहा है। अगर तुम मुझे अपना घोड़ा दे दो, तो मैं उसका पीछा करके तुम्हारी चुराई गई बकरी वापस ला सकता हूँ!" मूर्ख तुरंत घोड़े पर से उतर पड़ा और उसने घोड़ा तीसरे ठग के हवाले कर दिया। वह मूर्ख को चिढ़ाता हुआ घोड़े को लेकर सरपट भाग गया। बेचारा मूर्ख बहुत देर तक अपने पशुओं को पाने का इंतजार करता रहा, पर जब वह राह देखते देखते थक गया और ठग लौटकर नहीं आया, तो वह खाली हाथ ही घर वापस लौट आया।
दूर कहीं घंटी बजती रही और तीनों ठग गाते रहे,
घंटी घंटी बजती रहो,
रातोदिन गाती रहो,
जीवन एक खेल है सुनहरा।
शिक्षा — मूर्ख की तकदीर कभी लंबे समय तक उसका साथ नहीं देती।
