पिपहरीवाला और गाँव के लोग — The Piper and the Villagers
एक गाँव में हजारों चूहे थे। गाँव में ऐसी कोई जगह नहीं थी जहाँ चूहे न हों। ये चूहे ढेरों अनाज खा जाते थे। घर का सामान, कपड़े, कागज-पत्र — सब कुछ वे कुतर डालते थे। चूहों के कारण गाँव के लोगों को काफी नुकसान उठाना पड़ता था। वे किसी तरह चूहों से छुटकारा पाना चाहते थे।
एक दिन पिपहरीवाला उस गाँव में आया। उसने देखा कि गाँव के लोग चूहों से त्रस्त हैं। अतः उसने गाँव के लोगों से कहा, "मैं गाँव के सारे चूहों को खत्म कर दूँगा। पर इसके लिए तुम लोगों को मुझे पाँच हजार रुपए देने होंगे।" गाँववालों ने पिपहरीवाले को पाँच हजार रुपए देना मंजूर कर लिया।
पिपहरीवाला मधुर स्वर में अपनी पिपहरी बजाने लगा। पिपहरी की आवाज सुनकर सभी चूहे घरों, दुकानों, गोदामों तथा खेतों-खलिहानों से निकलकर दौड़ते हुए रास्ते पर आ गए। वे पिपहरी की आवाज सुनकर नाचने लगे। पिपहरी बजाने वाला नदी की ओर चल पड़ा। चूहे भी नाचते-नाचते उसके पीछे-पीछे चल पड़े। वह नदी के पानी में उतर गया। उसके पीछे चूहे भी पानी में कूद गए। इस तरह सारे चूहे पानी में कूदकर मर गए।
इसके बाद पिपहरीवाला गाँव में लौटा। उसने गाँववालों से अपने पाँच हजार रुपए माँगे। पर गाँववालों ने पैसे देने से इनकार कर दिया। पिपहरीवाले ने कहा, "तुम लोग बेईमान हो। अब मैं फिर से पिपहरी बजा रहा हूँ। इस बार तुम लोगों को पाँच हजार के बजाए दस हजार देने पड़ेंगे।"
उसने पहले से भी मधुर पिपहरी बजानी शुरू की। पिपहरी की आवाज सुनकर गाँव के सारे बच्चे रास्ते पर आ गए और मस्त होकर नाचने लगे। पिपहरीवाला पिपहरी बजाता रहा, बच्चे मस्ती में नाचते रहे। बहुत देर तक यों ही चलता रहा। गाँव के लोग न पिपहरीवाले को पिपहरी बजाने से रोक सके और न ही बच्चों को नाचने से।
गाँव के लोगों को लगा कि चूहों की तरह उनके बच्चों के भी नाचते-नाचते प्राण न निकल जाएँ। उन्हें अब पिपहरीवाले को पैसे न देने का बड़ा पछतावा हुआ। आखिरकार गाँववालों ने पिपहरीवाले से विनती की, "ये रहे तुम्हारे दस हजार रुपए। अपने पैसे लो और पिपहरी बजाना बंद करो।"
पिपहरीवाले ने पिपहरी बजाना बंद कर दिया। पैसे अपनी जेब में डालकर वह गाँव से चल पड़ा। पिपहरी की आवाज बंद होते ही बच्चों ने नाचना बंद कर दिया। वे अपने-अपने घर लौट गए। गाँव के लोगों में खुशी की लहर दौड़ गई।
शिक्षा — बेईमानी की सजा हमेशा बहुत भारी होती है।
