चार मित्र — The Four Friends
एक गाँव में चार मित्र रहते थे। उनमें से तीन बहुत ही विद्वान थे। पर वे व्यावहारिक ज्ञान की दृष्टि से एकदम कोरे थे।
चौथा मित्र पढ़ा-लिखा तो कम था, पर वह व्यावहारिक ज्ञान में माहिर था।
एक बार चारों मित्र अपना-अपना भाग्य आजमाने राजधानी की ओर चल पड़े। रास्ते में एक जंगल आया।
वहाँ उन्हें एक पेड़ के नीचे कुछ हड्डियाँ दिखाई दी। उनमें से एक व्यक्ति ने उन हड्डियों का निरीक्षण करते हुए कहा, "ये हड्डियाँ किसी शेर की हैं। इन हड्डियों को एकत्र कर मैं अपनी विद्या से मरे हुए शेर का कंकाल तैयार कर सकता हूँ।"
दूसरे विद्वान ने कहा, "मैं अपने ज्ञान के बल से उस कंकाल पर मांस चढ़ा कर एवं रक्त से भरकर उसे खाल से ढक सकता हूँ।"
तीसरे विद्वान ने कहा, "मैं अपनी विद्या से इस निर्जीव प्राणी को जीवित कर सकता हूँ।"
व्यावहारिक ज्ञान में माहिर चौथे मित्र को अपने तीनों मित्रों की बातें सुनकर बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ। उसने अपने विद्वान मित्रों को सावधान करते हुए कहा, "मित्रो, शेर को जीवित करना खतरे से खाली नहीं होगा।"
यह सुनकर पहले विद्वान ने कहा, "अरे, यह तो मूर्ख है! इस बेवकूफ को हमारे ज्ञान से ईर्ष्या हो रही है।"
दोनों विद्वान मित्रों ने भी उसका समर्थन किया। यह देखकर वह समझदार व्यक्ति दौड़कर एक पेड़ पर चढ़ गया। तीनों विद्वान मित्रों ने अपने-अपने ज्ञान का प्रयोग करना शुरू कर दिया।
पहले विद्वान ने सारी हड्डियाँ एकत्र कर उसका कंकाल तैयार किया। दूसरे विद्वान ने कंकाल पर मांस चढ़ाकर रक्त से भरकर उसे खाल से ढक दिया।
तीसरे ने अपनी विद्या का प्रयोग कर उस निर्जीव शेर में जान डाल दी। जान आते ही शेर दहाड़ता हुआ खड़ा हो गया और तीनों पर टूट पड़ा। तीनों विद्वान वहीं ढेर हो गए।
व्यावहारिक ज्ञान एवं सूझबूझ के कारण चौथे मित्र की जान बच गई।
शिक्षा — ज्ञान का अव्यावहारिक उपयोग विनाशकारी होता है। किताबी ज्ञान के साथ-साथ व्यावहारिक बुद्धि भी आवश्यक है।
