कछुआ हमेशा धीरे-धीरे चलता था। कछुए की चाल देख खरगोश खूब हँसता।

एक दिन कछुए ने खरगोश से दौड़ की शर्त लगाई। दौड़ शुरू हुई। खरगोश खूब जोर दौड़ने लगा। वह जल्दी ही कछुए से काफी आगे निकल गया।

अपनी जीत निश्चित मान कर खरगोश सोचने लगा, अभी कछुआ बहुत पीछे है। वह धीरे-धीरे चलता है। इतनी जल्दी शर्त जीतने की जरूरत क्या है? पेड़ के नीचे बैठकर थोड़ा आराम कर लूँ। जब कछुआ पास आता दिखाई देगा, तो दौड़कर मैं उससे आगे निकल जाऊँगा और शर्त जीत लूँगा। यह देखकर कछुआ खूब नाराज होगा। बड़ा मजा आयेगा।

खरगोश पेड़ की छाया में आराम करने लगा। कछुआ अब भी काफी पीछे था। थकान के कारण खरगोश को नींद आ गयी। जब उसकी आँख खुली तो उसने देखा कि कछुआ आगे चला गया है और विजय-रेखा पारकर मुस्करा रहा है।

खरगोश शर्त हार गया।

शिक्षा — धैर्य और लगन से काम करनेवाला विजयी होता है।
